Mac over at Barking Mad had an excellent idea to have your township designate your dog as being “SS” substantially similar or “NSS” not substantially similar.
Mac went to her township with dog Up Yours Dalton (call name Tupper) and asked for a letter of designation.
Here is the link..
Have a look at the letter received from the township..
Excellent idea Mac, and something we should all call our township and ask for!
As Mac says, “Remember There Are NO Illegal Or Restricted “SS” Dogs In Ontario
Until You Have Your Designation From The Ontario Gov`t. (It`s their job to designate, not yours and you can contest your designation in a court of law)”.
and something we should all call our township and ask for!
I ended up having to put my request in writing with a deadline and I told them it had to stand up in court and across the Province.
I told them my lawyer would request it again if they let the deadline pass.
I called on D day and was told the letter was at the front desk ready to be picked up.
I have a great Bylaw guy and there is no witch hunt in this Municipality.
After a few conversations with him about a few well known court cases and the law he understood and he knew it wasn`t a joke or to make them look bad.
I think he made a smart decision.
There is allot of pain being incurred in Ontario…scario these days with dogs being taken away from owners and death sentences being handed out like candy.
The recent court cases of both Rambo and Munchie that will or have cost the young owners $15.000 plus could have been avoided with the Province of Ontario designating what kind of dogs they were to begin with.
The Province of Ontario, in it's infinite wisdom under Michael Bryant the Former (now demoted) Attorney General, rather than making it difficult for owner's to have dangerous dogs, decided that dogs “looking a certain way” were to be banned and killed. No regard to temperament or disposition given.
The difficulty NOW is what exactly is a “NSS” and what IS a “SS” dog? In Munchie's case the court judge did not take the testimony of a Canadian Kennel Club Judge, with years and years of experience but took the word of a animal control officer who took a few courses. It seems that in the previous EIGHT cases, the CKJ testified that the dogs were Not Pit Bulls. The decision to go with a ACO gave Munchie a DEATH SENTENCE and the girls a HUGE Bill. NOTE: Although there was a video and behavioural tests along with letters of neighbours saying that Munchie was good with other dogs and kids, THESE thing were also not taken into consideration by the preceding judge.
I NOW firmly believe that every citizen of Ontario that owns a dog needs to ask, NO, DEMAND A DESIGNATION for their dog from the Province. IF not, ” YOU and your little dog” might very well be the next ones to battle in expensive court rooms over it's lineage.
The Province put this nightmare upon it's citizens and now needs to take responsibility for it's laws. As dog cases continue to tie up the courts, then it is no wonder serious cases such as the recently discarded Cop Corruption Case are thrown out of the courts due to time restraints. For the sake of true justice this should be done.
Rather then have the animal control people decide YOUR fate and take YOUR dog away at the whim of a disgrunted neighbour DEMAND YOUR “NSS or your “SS” DESIGNATION FROM THE PROVINCE NOW. Your dogs life and your financial stability could depend on it.
This is great information to know. The more information people are armed with the better chance they will achieve what they want.
I love this idea and hope we can inspire everyone to go into thier township offices to get clarification. I think most people would give up if they don't recieve a response, so knowing what process you went through helps!
Very well said Fran!
It has to be ALL dogs!
Not just iffy dogs that look like dogs that have been charged.
“SS” might mean common ancestor, paws, teeth, tail and claws in a court of law.
If Mac had been black,he would have looked a lot like UYD only smaller with more hair on the tail.
So take your Poodles,Labs,Westies and Weiner dogs in for your designation.
I almost fell over when I picked up that letter.
Crazy me,I thought there would be a designation and we all know what we thought it would be.
